Wait… no sorry, I mean….
PAGING DR. Ben Wilmot!
Oh, wait, that’s not right either..
What do Lt. Carlton Burk and Dr. Ben Wilmot have in common?
They’re both played by actor Jocko Sims.
Jocko plays Lt. Burk on TNT’s The Last Ship alongside Eric Dane, Travis Van Winkle and Bridget Regan. He recently played Dr. Ben Wilmot on the new show on FOX The Resident alongside, Matt Czuchry, Emily VanCamp and Bruce Greenwood.
Let’s get started in the next #Whitterview article of the series.
Tell me about yourself:
JS: “ I was born in Houston Texas, and grew up in San Antonio. My parents divorced when I was very young, and I grew up mainly with my mom, but I’m very close with my dad as well. I had a modest upbringing, as my mom didn’t make a lot of money, but she took care of me very well. I went to a multicultural high school, where I was president of my Spanish club, a member of national honor society, and graduated in the top 5% of my class. After high school I wanted to pursue becoming a dentist or doctor, but when I go to college, I realized I didn’t want to be in school for the next 12 years, and fell in love with acting.
Where were you when you found out you were cast in The Last Ship?
JS: “I remember when I first auditioned for The Last Ship, it was a role that I had struggled with. I had to play this tough as nails maybe Lieutenant, who is whipping his men in shape to get ready for battle. I didn’t imagine I’d be cast. I got the call about three weeks after I had gone in, and I was really excited about it. At the time it was supposed to be about five episodes, and five turned into five seasons, towards the end of the short run, the show creator at the time, Hank Steinberg, came up and told me he wanted me to stay for the long run. That was the best news ever.”
Is The Last Ship coming back for another season?
JS: “The Last Ship is definitely coming back this summer for season five!”
Who has been your favorite character to play?
JS: “My favorite character to play thus far was “Robert Franklin on Showtime’s Masters of Sex.” Although it was only seven episodes, the character arc spread over two years, and in the short amount of time, I got to play Robert through his growth from a young man to a leader in the civil rights movement.”
Whats it like being a producer and director?
JS: “ I was producing a television series that ended up not coming to fruition. It was a great learning experience for me, and I look forward to writing and producing much more in the near future!”
If you could be on any other tv show what would it be?
JS: “If I could be on any other TV show as well…. I would choose Ozark on Netflix. It’s well written, and well directed by the lead actor, Jason Bateman.”
What has been your favorite episode of The Last Ship?
JS: “My favorite episode of The Last Ship thus far will be the fifth episode of this upcoming fifth season. You’ll have to stay tuned to see why!”
What’s next? Any new roles coming up?
JS: “Currently I’m filming a pilot in New York that’s based on New York’s famous Bellevue hospital, where I play a Yale grad and a cardiac surgeon (and yes my second doctor role recently). I guess I was described to be a doctor after all!
